A robotic lawn mower is one of the most hands-off ways to keep a yard looking sharp, but "hands-off" doesn't mean "maintenance-free." These little machines trim your lawn several times a week, and just like any tool that runs that often, they need routine care to stay quiet, efficient, and long-lived. The good news: robotic mower maintenance is far simpler than caring for a gas mower. No oil changes, no spark plugs, no carburetor cleaning. Most of the work takes 10-15 minutes a week, and the annual servicing can be done at your kitchen table with basic hand tools.

This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your robotic lawn mower running smoothly, from weekly cleaning to blade replacement, battery care, and off-season storage.

Why Robotic Mower Maintenance Matters

Robotic mowers cut grass differently than traditional mowers. Instead of one big weekly cut, they nibble off tiny amounts of grass every day or two. That means the blades encounter fewer clippings per pass, but they're spinning far more often. Over a full season, a robotic mower's blades will cover an enormous amount of grass compared to a weekend push mower.

Neglecting maintenance shows up in three ways: uneven cuts, shorter battery runtime, and expensive repairs to the drive wheels, sensors, or charging contacts. A well-maintained robotic mower easily lasts 8-10 years. A neglected one can start failing in 3-4.

Weekly Maintenance Tasks

Set a recurring 15-minute slot each weekend for a quick walk-through. Do these tasks with the mower powered off and, ideally, with the safety key or battery removed.

1. Brush Off Grass Clippings

Grass clippings pack into the wheel wells, blade disc, and underside chassis. Use a soft-bristled brush or a plastic scraper to knock the debris loose. Avoid metal scrapers, which can scratch the housing and damage sensors. If clippings are wet or caked on, let the mower dry for a few hours first, then brush them away.

2. Check the Blades

Most robotic mowers use three or four small pivoting razor blades instead of one large fixed blade. Flip the mower over and inspect each one. Look for chips, bends, or heavy wear along the cutting edge. A dull or damaged blade tears grass instead of slicing it, which leaves brown tips and forces the motor to work harder.

3. Clean the Charging Contacts

The metal contacts on the mower and dock get coated with dirt, oxidation, and grass film over time. Wipe them with a dry microfiber cloth. If they look tarnished, a light rub with a pencil eraser will restore the shine without damaging the plating. Never use sandpaper or abrasive pads.

4. Inspect the Wheels

Grass and dirt get wrapped around the drive wheel axles. Turn each wheel by hand and listen for grinding or resistance. Remove any tangled debris with tweezers or a small screwdriver.

Monthly Maintenance Tasks

Rinse the Chassis (Carefully)

Most modern robotic mowers are rated for light rinsing with a garden hose. Do not use a pressure washer, which can drive water past seals and into the motor or electronics. Use a gentle spray, hold the mower upside down or on its side, and let it fully air-dry before returning it to the dock.

Check your specific model's manual first. A handful of older or budget robotic mowers are not rinseable at all; those need to be cleaned only with a damp cloth.

Rotate or Replace the Blades

Pivoting blades wear evenly on both cutting edges, so many owners simply flip them over halfway through the season and replace them at the end. If you spot chips, cracks, or bent metal, replace immediately. Blades are cheap - usually less than $1 per blade - and running with damaged blades ruins your cut and stresses the motor.

Replace all blades at once, even if only one looks worn. Uneven blade wear makes the cutting disc wobble, which shortens the life of the spindle bearings.

Check the Boundary Wire

If your mower uses a perimeter wire (many newer GPS and vision-based models don't), walk the perimeter once a month and look for exposed sections. Wires that get chewed by animals, damaged by an edger, or lifted by frost heave will interrupt the signal and send the mower into an error state. Splice any breaks with waterproof wire connectors made for landscape lighting.

Seasonal and Annual Maintenance

Deep Clean at Season Start

At the start of each mowing season, do a full teardown clean. Remove the blade disc, wipe out the cutting chamber, clean the underside chassis thoroughly, and inspect every wheel and sensor. Any bearings that feel gritty when spun by hand should be flagged for service.

Battery Care

Modern robotic mowers use lithium-ion batteries that last 3-5 years depending on use. There's no maintenance required during the season, but battery lifespan drops fast if you make three common mistakes: storing the mower fully discharged, storing it in freezing temperatures, or leaving it on the dock in extreme heat.

If you notice your mower's runtime dropping significantly - say, from 90 minutes to 40 minutes on a single charge - the battery is nearing the end of its life. Replacement batteries are widely available and usually cost between $80 and $200, far less than replacing the whole mower.

Firmware Updates

Check the manufacturer's app for firmware updates at least once a quarter. Firmware updates improve navigation algorithms, fix bugs, and sometimes add new features. Most updates install automatically over Wi-Fi, but some require you to manually confirm.

Winter Storage

In climates with freezing winters, you'll need to store your robotic mower indoors from late fall until spring. Here's the process:

Start by giving the mower a thorough cleaning - brush off all clippings, wipe down the chassis, and clean the charging contacts. Charge the battery to roughly 50-70%. Storing lithium-ion batteries at full charge or fully depleted damages the cells over time, so a mid-range charge is ideal.

Store the mower in a dry indoor space that stays above freezing and below 80°F. A garage, basement, or utility closet works well. Don't leave it on the charging dock during storage; unplug the dock and store the mower separately.

Coil the boundary wire loosely and bring the base station indoors as well. Leaving the base station exposed to freezing rain and snow shortens its lifespan considerably.

Common Issues and Quick Fixes

Mower Says "Blade Stuck"

Usually caused by grass or a small twig wedged between the blade disc and chassis. Flip the mower and clear the debris by hand.

Uneven or Ragged Cut

Almost always a blade problem. Replace the blades, and if the problem persists, check the blade disc for wear or wobble.

Mower Returns to Dock Too Early

Either the battery is aging or the cutting height is set too low for the grass conditions, which forces the motor to work harder and drain faster. Raise the cutting height slightly and see if runtime improves.

Mower Won't Charge

Clean the charging contacts on both the mower and the dock. Check that the dock's power adapter is plugged in and the indicator light is on. If the contacts look burned or pitted, that's a sign of arcing and the dock may need service.

When to Call a Professional

Most robotic mower maintenance is DIY-friendly. Call a service technician if you notice water inside the chassis, if the mower makes grinding noises from the wheel motors, or if error codes persist after basic troubleshooting. These issues usually mean sealed bearings or motor components have failed and need specialized tools to replace.
