Robotic lawn mowers promise a hands-off lawn, but a few minutes of maintenance each month keeps them running for a decade instead of a season. Here's a homeowner-friendly guide to blades, batteries, sensors, and winter storage.

Why Robotic Mower Maintenance Matters

A robotic lawn mower is one of the most set-and-forget appliances you can buy for your yard, but "set and forget" doesn't mean "never touch." These small machines quietly log hundreds of hours per season, cutting a few millimeters of grass at a time, dodging trees, and climbing back onto their charging docks. Regular robotic lawn mower maintenance is what separates a unit that lasts eight to ten years from one that limps into its third summer with dull blades, a swollen battery, and error codes the app can't explain.

The good news: unlike a gas push mower, there are no spark plugs, oil changes, air filters, or fuel stabilizers to worry about. The whole maintenance routine takes about fifteen minutes a month, plus a longer session at the start and end of the mowing season. This guide walks through exactly what to do, when to do it, and what to watch for.

Monthly: The Fifteen-Minute Routine

1. Clean the underside and blade disc

Flip the mower upside down on a soft surface (a folded towel protects the top shell). You'll see a spinning disc with three small pivoting razor blades, plus a housing packed with matted grass clippings. Grass tends to compact around the drive shaft and inside the wheel wells, and once it dries it acts like a brake shoe against the motor.

Use a stiff plastic brush, a wooden stick, or a plastic putty knife to scrape it out. Avoid metal tools near the sensors and never spray the underside with a pressure washer unless your manual specifically allows it, high-pressure water finds its way past seals and into the electronics. A garden hose on a gentle setting is fine for most current-generation mowers.

2. Inspect the blades

Robotic mower blades are tiny (usually 1.5 to 2 inches long) and inexpensive, often less than a dollar apiece. Because they pivot freely, they don't need sharpening the way a rotary mower blade does. Instead, they wear down and eventually chip. Look for:

  • Rounded or nicked cutting edges
  • Cracks near the mounting hole
  • Uneven wear across the three blades (a sign of imbalance)

Replace all three at once, even if only one looks worn. An unbalanced blade disc creates vibration that wears out the cutting motor bearings prematurely.

3. Wipe the charging contacts

The metal strips on the mower and the matching contacts on the dock accumulate a thin film of oxidation and lawn debris. A dry microfiber cloth or a pencil eraser cleans them up in seconds. Corroded contacts are the single most common cause of "failed to charge" errors.

4. Check the wheels and sensors

Spin each wheel by hand, listening for grit. Clear any grass wrapped around the axles. Wipe the lift sensors, tilt sensors, and any ultrasonic or camera modules with a soft, damp cloth. Modern models from Husqvarna, Worx, Segway Navimow, and Mammotion rely heavily on these sensors for obstacle detection, and a smear of dried grass juice can genuinely confuse them.

Seasonal: Spring Startup and Fall Shutdown

Before the first cut of the season, do everything on the monthly list plus:

  • Install a fresh set of blades and screws. New screws matter, they're a wear item and can shear off mid-cut if reused too many seasons.
  • Inspect the perimeter wire if your model uses one. Winter frost heave, aerator tines, and curious squirrels all break boundary wires. A splice kit and a wire locator tool save hours of guesswork.
  • Update firmware. Manufacturers push meaningful improvements to navigation and battery management between seasons. Open the app, connect to Wi-Fi, and let it update before scheduling any mows.
  • Test the dock power supply. Wall warts fail more often than the mowers themselves. If your dock's status light doesn't come on, that's your problem, not the mower.

Fall shutdown checklist

When nighttime temperatures start dropping into the 40s Fahrenheit and grass growth slows, it's time to put the mower to bed:

  • Give it a thorough clean, dried grass left on for months becomes cement.
  • Charge the battery to roughly 50 to 70 percent. Storing lithium-ion batteries at full charge accelerates capacity loss. Storing them empty risks deep discharge damage.
  • Remove the mower from the yard and store it indoors, ideally somewhere that stays between 40 and 70 F. An unheated garage in a mild climate is fine; a shed in Minnesota is not.
  • Unplug the charging dock and bring the power supply inside. Leave the dock itself in place if it's rated for outdoor exposure, or store it too if you have room.
  • Mark the perimeter wire path or take photos, spring you will thank fall you.

Battery Care: The Component That Decides Lifespan

The single most expensive part of a robotic mower is its battery, and battery health is almost entirely determined by how you store and charge it. A few habits extend life dramatically:

  • Let it live on the dock during the season. These mowers are designed to trickle-charge between mows. Yanking them off and running them down repeatedly stresses the cells.
  • Avoid extreme heat. Docks placed in direct afternoon sun on a south-facing wall can push battery temperatures above safe operating ranges. Move the dock into partial shade if you can.
  • Watch for range decline. If you notice the mower returning to charge much sooner than it used to, or covering less area per cycle, the battery is aging. Most manufacturers sell replacement packs, and swapping one is usually a ten-minute job with a screwdriver.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even well-maintained robotic mowers occasionally throw errors. The three most common:

"Outside working area." Nine times out of ten this is a broken perimeter wire, not a lost mower. Walk the boundary and look for obvious cuts, or use the manufacturer's wire-break locator function.

"Lifted" or "Tilted" during normal mowing. Usually a sensor caked with grass, or the mower getting hung up on a tree root. Clean the sensors and check for terrain that needs leveling.

"No charging." In order of likelihood: dirty contacts, dislodged dock, tripped GFCI outlet, failed power supply, failed battery. Check them in that order.

The Payoff

Fifteen minutes a month and two longer sessions a year is a genuinely small tax to pay for a mower that cuts your lawn 200 times a season while you're at work. Owners who follow this routine routinely report their machines running strong past the eight-year mark, well beyond the typical three-to-five-year lifespan of neglected units.
